The International Symposium on Geoenvironmental Engineering (ISGE 2009) was held on September 8-10, 2009 in Hangzhou, China. ISGE 2009 was organized by MOE Key Laboratory of Soft Soils and Geoenvironmental Engineering, Zhejiang University, Chinese Institution of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (CISMGE), and Chinese Chapter of International Geosynthetics Society (CCIGS), under the auspices of ISSMGE TC5, sponsored by K. C. Wong Education Foundation, and National Natural Science Foundation of China, as well as Zhejiang University Zeng Guo-Xi Lecture Fund.

Issues associated with Environmental Geotechnics continue to be a major preoccupation for governments, public and private organizations and the general community worldwide. The Chinese Government has been putting great effort on environmental issues including sanitary disposal of solid waste, reuse of industrial wastes, remediation of contaminated land, prevention of groundwater contamination, environmental risk assessment, ecological techniques, etc. China also has much to share on the opportunities, challenges and responsibilities for environmental geotechnics with other countries, especially the developing countries.

Geotechnical Engineering for Mine Waste Disposal and Management

Summary

The book is a comprehensive treatment of the application of geotechnical engineering to site selection, site exploration, design, operation and closure of mine waste storage facilities.
The level and content are suitable as a technical source and reference for practising engineers engaged both in the design and operational management of mine waste storage facilities and for senior undergraduate and postgraduate students. The thirteen chapters follow the sequence of the life cycle of a waste storage facility (characterization, site selection, geotechnical exploration, environmental aspects, testing and compaction) and also consider the use of mine waste as a construction material.

The text is liberally illustrated by both line drawings and photographs, and the theoretical passages are supported by typical test results, worked examples and carefully analysed case histories.

This handbook was published in March 2006 by the Federation of Piling Specialists (FPS) to provide guidance on the principles and practical issues that relate to load testing of bearing piles, and thereby to assist informed decisions about testing requirements on construction projects involving piled foundations.

The FPS anticipates that this handbook will be of particular interest to civil or structural engineers with little or no experience of piling who find themselves in the position of specifying load testing requirements on a project involving piled foundations. The target audience for this publication also includes main contractors, management contractors and young piling engineers. Pile load testing provides an opportunity for continuous improvement in foundation design and construction practices, while at the same time fulfilling its traditional role of design validation and routine quality control of the piling works. In order to achieve this improvement, data from pile tests has to be collected and analysed to enable the piling industry, both individually and collectively, to make the best use of resources. To justify its cost to the industry, pile testing must have a value. The magnitude of this value will be increased through a better understanding of the process and its benefits.

In this handbook the Federation of Piling Specialists aims to provide guidance on issues that should be considered to enable better planning, specification and execution of pile tests, thereby increasing the value of the testing process
