ZMAP

Earthquake catalogs are probably the most fundamental products of seismology and remain arguably the most useful for tectonic studies. Modern seismograph networks can locate up to 100,000 earthquakes annually, providing a continuous and sometime overwhelming stream of data.

ZMAP is a set of tools driven by a graphical user interface (GUI), designed to help seismologists analyze catalog data. You need the commercial software MATLAB to run ZMAP. ZMAP is primarily a research tool suited to the evaluation of catalog quality and to addressing specific hypotheses; however, it can also be useful in routine network operations. Roughly 150 scientists worldwide have used the software at least occasionally. About 50 peer-reviewed publications have made use of ZMAP. NOte, however, that we are not able to systematically mainatin and update ZMAP.

ZMAP was presented in an overview article in SRL. There is also a Cookbook available as a PDF document.

We have tried hard to make ZMAP as versatile, user-friendly, and accurate as possible. Nevertheless, some bugs remain and others have undoubtedly been introduced, and some features will remain cryptic to many users. If you have questions, suggestions or bug to report, feel free to send me an e-mail.
Using ZMAP with different MATLAB versions (6.1, 6.5, 7)

Basic ZMAP functions usually work on all MATLAB versions. However, since we are now mainly working with MATLAB 6.5 and MATLAB 7, problems may arise with earlier versions. Note that we are upgrading to MATLAB 7, thus some functions might not exist if you are using an earlier version.
